I already formatted the card or drive. Is it too late?
Usually not. A quick format clears the list of files, not the photos. As long as nothing new has been saved over them, Shotback can usually bring them back. Stop using the card or drive and scan it.
Does it work with USB sticks and external hard drives?
Yes. Shotback recovers photos and videos from SD and memory cards, USB sticks, and external hard drives and SSDs — plus disk images of them. One caveat: on many modern external SSDs, files you deleted may already be cleared by a feature called TRIM, though a formatted SSD often still has recoverable photos. The free scan tells you what is there before you pay.
Can scanning damage my card or drive?
No. Shotback's disk reader can only read, so it can't change anything on your card or drive.
Do my photos get uploaded anywhere?
Never. Everything happens on your Mac. Shotback only goes online to activate your license and check for updates.
What if it doesn't find my photos?
Then you don't pay. The scan and preview are free, so you'll know before you buy. If you buy and it doesn't help, email us within 7 days for a full refund.

I got a new Mac. Can I move my license?
Yes. Deactivate it in Shotback on the old Mac, then activate it on the new one. Lost access to the old Mac? Email us and we’ll reset it.
Will I get my original file names back?
No. When files are deleted or a card or drive is formatted, the names are gone. Shotback names each file from the date and camera stored inside it, like 2026-05-14_183022_Canon-EOS-R6.CR3.
How long does a scan take?
Mostly it depends on how fast your card reader or drive is. A large card or drive can take a little while; you can watch photos appear as it goes.
Which Macs does it work on?
macOS 13 Ventura or later.
Can it recover photos deleted from my iPhone or my Mac?
No. Shotback works with cards and external drives. For photos deleted from your Mac or iPhone, check Recently Deleted in Photos, the Trash, Time Machine, or iCloud.
Is there a Windows version?
Not yet. Shotback is Mac-only.
